Sunlight-readable display sourcing for outdoor applications
NorthBridge Display sources high-brightness LCD displays for EV charging stations, outdoor kiosks, transportation terminals, digital signage, and other applications where standard panel brightness is insufficient for outdoor use.
Outdoor display sourcing involves more than brightness — surface treatment, optical bonding, operating temperature, and enclosure compatibility all determine real-world performance. We help evaluate all of these factors together.
Understanding brightness requirements
Brightness alone does not determine outdoor readability — but it is the primary starting point. Use this guide as an initial reference when specifying a display for your application.
Note: Surface treatment (AR/AG coating) and optical bonding also significantly affect perceived outdoor readability at any brightness level.
Outdoor display sourcing capabilities
High-Brightness Backlight
Outdoor applications require displays with significantly higher backlight brightness than standard panels. We source displays rated 700 to 2500+ nits, with the appropriate backlight technology for sustained high-brightness operation.
- Standard: 700–1000 nits
- High brightness: 1000–1500 nits
- Ultra: 1500–2500+ nits
- Sustained brightness rated
Optical Bonding
Optical bonding eliminates the internal air gap between the LCD panel and cover glass, dramatically reducing internal reflections. This improves outdoor contrast and legibility more than simply increasing brightness.
- OCA (optically clear adhesive)
- Eliminates internal reflections
- Better contrast than air-gap assemblies
- Reduces condensation risk
Wide Operating Temperature
Outdoor displays must operate year-round: -30°C winter temperatures in northern climates, 50°C+ enclosure temperatures in summer sun. We source panels rated for the full environmental range of the intended installation location.
- -30°C to +70°C operating range
- Anti-condensation design
- Cold-start capable backlights
- Thermal management guidance
Surface Treatment & Protection
Anti-reflective (AR), anti-glare (AG), and anti-fingerprint (AF) surface treatments reduce glare and improve legibility in direct sunlight. We match surface treatment to the specific installation environment.
- Anti-reflective (AR) coating
- Anti-glare (AG) surface
- Hardened cover glass options
- IP-rated enclosure integration support
